Simon joined and graduated from the Alaskan academy along with his partner, Kamina in 2017. The fact that he joined the academy at all is largely Kamina's fault, and it's probably a pretty common story that Kamina, in all his enthusiasm to be awesome and punch kaiju, just dragged Simon along. But those closer (like other participants in the program) know it was Simon who kept them from getting kicked out.
In late 2017 they both graduated and became rangers, they were given a Mark 3 jaeger named Helix Plunge and stationed in Nagasaki. They quickly obtained idol status in Japan, but of course anyone who really paid attention the jaeger scene would know of the pair.
Despite not having any blood relation, they always referred to each other and acted like brothers. Kamina was by far the 'main' face of their team, really taking to the limelight, while Simon tended to be quieter and more reserved. That said, obviously he still had his fans. Kamina really played up the media role and people who didn't know him probably thought he was a bit of a hack, but there's no doubt that the two were hella legit pilots. They were particularly famous for starting slow and finishing off flashy, and their drift sync would always increase as the stakes got higher.
Kamina was fatally injured during a level 3 attack on Japan, but stayed alive long enough to help Simon finish off the kaiju before succumbing to his wounds. It was a big blow to a lot of people, but of course especially Simon. After that Simon pretty much disappeared out of the public eye completely, though people in Japan might have heard that Simon was recently trapped inside a collapsed public shelter during an attack, and helped safely find an escape and evacuate the people there.
After regaining his self confidence, he asked to become active in the PPDC again and specifically sought out the Valparaíso Shatterdome in hopes of finding someone else he can drift with.
Notes for Other Pilots/People who were at the Alaskan Jaeger Academy at the same time as Simon: YOU ARE FREE TO ASSUME YOU HAVE MET, though I definitely encourage commenting to me here so we can brainstorm something. In general, Simon is always a polite and amicable fellow, though he used to be a lot more shy and withdrawing. He's definitely changed since Kamina's death.
